The original vintage red Moroccan rugs from the 1940s-1970s were hand dyed in traditional methods with natural dyes made from plants, flowers and spices. The rich and intense colours made colour fast and made to last. The beautiful rich and intense red colour fades over time to softer earthy tones, unmatched by newer synthetic dyes.

While some contemporary rug weavers are still using the traditional natural dyeing methods, the newer Moroccan rug styles from the late 1980s and 1990s onwards are mostly made using imported wools and synthetic dyes.
